Do you have to configure pc if you connect two with cross over ethernet cable? How?

step by step please. do it for a dummy. thank you

All you need to do is put each computer into the same workgroup and enable file and printer sharing.

Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name tab -> Change -> type something in workgroup. Do the same thing with the other computer.

Right click My Network Places -> Properties -> Set up a home or small office network and follow the wizard.

To connect a PC to a PC with a crossover just connect the crossover cable (make sure it IS crossover) to each of the computers eth ports. Then ensure the windows firewall(s) are turned off to make sure no blocks happen. Make sure the computers are in the same workgroup as well (right click on the my computer, then goto properties and see your workgroups, if they don't match you can't file share, make em the same).

hey yeah, great little Lan there!!!

1-log into Station A as an Admin, plug in the crossover cable to its Lan port
2-right click on My Network Places and select Properties from the popup menu to get a window
3-right click the Lan icon and select Properties
4-right click TCP/IP and select Properties from the popup menu to get a new window

...now you get to set your IP address manually, can't use auto settings here but DNS setting can remain auto (won't use DNS)

ip address - 192.168.1.2
subnet mask - 255.255.255.255 <---marks station A as a unique network member

now do the same for Station B, but...

ip address - 192.168.1.3
subnet mask - 255.255.255.255

now when you left click on My Network Places and look for computers near you, some computers appear using their NetBeui names

...for each station to access the other's shared resources they must log into one another
1-double click the computer
2-enter a valid user name and password recognized by that other computer
...deep breath,whew!

you may have to create additional shares to swap files back and forth and use the other's apps (but this will involve creating shares and group privileges, and securities)
